COURSE DESCRIPTION:
An analytical and expository study emphasizing the miracles and discourses of
Christ and John’s portrayal of His deity.
I. Rational:
Some people study the Bible to try to prove what they believe. But, we want to
study the Bible with and open mind and allow the Holy Spirit to teach us what we
need to believe. This way we will arrive at some conclusions on what John was
saying about the person of Christ, and what Jesus was revealing about Himself.
II. Prerequisite: NA
III. Program Objectives and Related Specific Objectives:
A. Cognitive
1. To gain a thorough understanding of who Jesus Christ is, what He
taught, and what He did.
2. To acquaint the student the differences between the Gospel of John and
the other three gospels.
B. Performance
1. The student will be able to tell who the author of John is and tell a little
about him.
2. The student will be able to explain why this book was written.
3. The student will be able to explain who Jesus was, what He taught, and
what He did.
IV. Preassessment:
The student will write a brief paper of their goals for this class.
V. Instructional/Learning Activities:
1. The student will read the textbook in its entirety.
2. The student will fill in all the questions within the text.
3. The student will answer all the CLASS DISCUSSION question at the end of
each lesson.
4. The student will write detailed teaching notes for each lesson of the text.
(These notes should expound on the material within the text. Example –
Add extra cross-reference scriptures, notes on related subjects, etc.)
5. The student will complete the final exam.
6. All work must be typed and sent in for grading.

The student will reread his brief paper on his goals for the class.

- Understand the purpose of John’s Gospel—to unveil Jesus as the Son of God and lead believers into life, faith, and fellowship
- See Christ as the Word, the Lamb of God, the life-giving Spirit, and the resurrection and the life
- Trace John’s major themes: eternal life, believing, light, truth, grace, love, and glory
- Explain the meaning of key “I AM” revelations (Bread of Life, Light of the World, Door, Good Shepherd, Resurrection, Way/Truth/Life, True Vine)
- Gain insight into John’s signs and miracles and what they reveal about Christ and God’s purpose
- Learn how John presents the new birth, the work of the Holy Spirit, and the believer’s inward renewal
- Understand the believer’s union with Christ through the vine and branches picture (abiding, fruit-bearing, and spiritual growth)
- Appreciate the Lord’s high-priestly prayer (John 17) and its focus on oneness, sanctification, and glory
- Apply the Gospel of John to daily Christian living—faith, assurance, intimacy with God, and living by the Spirit
- Develop outlines and lesson notes for teaching, preaching, and discipleship from each major section of the book.
