COURSE DESCRIPTION:
This course is designed to familiarize the student with the principles of teaching as related to the biblical text. Emphasis is placed upon the principles of organization and presentation of material for use in Sunday School, adult education, home fellowship, and other church-related environments.
I. RATIONALE:
The Bible teaches the importance of teaching. Most of the ministry of Jesus consisted of teaching. In order to fulfill the Great Commission, the ministerial student must be well prepared to teach and to teach others to teach.
II. PREREQUISITES:
None
III. PROGRAM OBJECTIVES AND RELATED SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES:
A. Cognitive:

To gain a thorough understanding of what constitutes Bible teaching through acquaintance with and practice in the use of the proper principles and tools.

To acquaint the student with the various modern schools of biblical teaching.

To gain an understanding of the principles and psychology of teaching and learning theory.
B. Performance:

The student will be able to develop sound teaching plans that demonstrate the principles of teaching.

The student will be able to assist others in the development of teaching plans and the development of teaching skills.
IV. PREASSESSMENT:
A. The student will write a brief statement of his or her own philosophy of teaching.
B. The student will write a brief statement expressing his or her expectations of this course.
V. INSTRUCTIONAL/LEARNING ACTIVITIES:
A. The textbook(s) must be read in its entirety, and a chapter outline must be completed.
B. The student will complete the Study Guide.
C. The student will write a 5–7 page term paper on the subject matter of the text.
D. The student will complete the self-test at the end of each chapter.
E. The student will write detailed teaching outlines (notes) for each chapter.
F. All work must be typed and submitted for grading.
VI. SELF-EVALUATION:
A. The student will reread his or her own expectations of the course and compare them to what has been learned.
VII. POST ASSESSMENT:
A. The student will read the suggestions of the mentor regarding the lesson outline and make appropriate corrections.
B. The student will discuss the term paper with the mentor.
VIII. CORRECTIVE LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES:
A. Any corrections or changes in the term paper suggested by the mentor will be made before the final grade is assigned.
