Course Title: English Composition

Course Description: A study of the principles of composition with emphasis on
language, the mechanics of writing, the types of discourse, and
research and documentation. The course develops students’
ability to write unified, well-developed and coherent expository
essays that employ standard English usage and mechanics, and
exposes the students to literary works that sharpen their critical-
thinking and analytical skill necessary in college writing. The
course also includes a study of rhetoric and short essay
composition, and readings and responsive writing assignments.
This is predominantly a skills course to develop the student’s
writing competency as a foundation for all future studies.

I. Rationale

The ability to communicate effectively, both in oral and written form is studied in
this course. Emphasis on proper grammar, sentence structure, etc. is reviewed
from a Biblical perspective.

II. Prerequisites:

III. Program Objectives and Related Specific Objectives

Cognitive:
1. To understand the basic knowledge of English grammar.
2. To understand basic English composition skills.
3. To help the student understand how to write using his own ideas as
well as the ideas of others.
4. To help the student understand how to expand their language and
communication skills.

Performance:
1. The student will be able to explain and properly use the basic skills
of English composition and grammar.
2. The student will be able to effectively express his/her thoughts
along with the thoughts of others using the proper grammar and
compositional structures.

IV. Preassessment

The student will write a brief paper defining course goals.

V. Instructional/Learning Activities

The student will complete the following:

1. Complete the Pre-Assessment (Course Goals Paper).
2. Read the textbook.
3. Complete the Study Guide.
4. Complete the Final Examination for the course.
5. Complete the Post-Assessment (End of Course Critique).
6. Complete the Course Satisfaction Survey.
